Margaret Durow / Mariken Wessels / Jessica Hans

Margaret Durow is a photographer originating from sunny Wisconsin, U.S.A. where she continues to live and work. Margaret has been featured in magazines like PIG, Lowdown and Coma Magazine; all at the ripe old age of 20. Her work is very dreamy, often combining photographs with black and white low quality photocopy's. The pictures have a timeless quality to them, all taken in the middle of nature. She tells us about her love of the great outdoors, exploring the countryside, preferably with the horizon in full view. With her pictures, Margaret is trying to make people realise that we are a part of nature and that we will destroy ourselves if we continue to disrupt natural systems for short term benefits. "All of these photos were taken this summer, except the last one, which was taken in spring. My sister is in the last photo, and the buildings were breaking up the sun, making it shine on her for just the right moment. Spring felt like that - deadlines and trying to get everything done just right. Then summer came and everything slowed down but kept changing (maybe slowly, but maybe more than it ever has). It's been a beautiful summer, filled with sun, heat, water, friends, life, and love - which is what the other photos are all about. They are all of me, and the third one is me and my best friend George. They might all be part of a series, I'm not sure yet, but if they are it surely isn't complete and probably has something to do with water, movement, time, warmth, and trying to feel everything completely before it's gone."

It was a good mail week.. I received a copy of Baltimore based Jessica Hans‘ beautifully hand sewn zine, Felsgarten, which features images of her personal rock collection. Thanks Jessica.

그래픽 디자인, 광고, 뮤직 비디오, 다큐멘터리 등 다양한 분야에서 전방위적인 활동을 펼치고 있는 마이크 밀즈(Mike Mills)의 첫 번째 장편 영화 썸써커(Thumbsucker)의 개봉과 함께 출판된 책입니다.  타카시 홈마(Takashi Homma), 라이언 맥긴리(Ryan Mcginley), 에드 템플턴(Ed Templeton), 토드 콜(Todd Cole) 그리고 마크 보쓰윅(Mark Borthwick).  이 다섯 명의 포토그래퍼들은 마이크 밀즈의 영화 촬영 현장으로 초대되어 아무런 조건 없이 자유롭게 촬영한 결과물을 책에 담았습니다.  책 디자인과 표지 일러스트레이션은 마이크 밀즈가 직접 맡았고, 뷰티풀 루저즈(Beautiful Losers)로 잘 알려진 독립 큐레이터이자 밴드 더 새즈(The Sads)로 활동하고 있는 그의 오랜 친구 애론 로즈(Aaron Rose)가 마이크 밀즈에 대해 쓴 글과 함께 다섯 명의 포토그래퍼에 대해 마이크 밀즈가 직접 쓴 글이 책에 실렸습니다.  Mike Mills 마이크 밀즈 Mike Mills (1966~) 1966년 미국 캘리포니아에서 태어난 마이크 밀즈(Mike Mills)는 Copper Union에서 디자인 과정을 수료하고 1993년 애론 로즈(Aaron Rose)와 함께 한 프로젝트 '헬프(Help)'를 통해 단숨에 주목 받기 시작했습니다.  젊은 시절의 믹 재거(Mick Jagger)를 전시장 뒤쪽 벽에 그려 넣는 획기적인 발상으로 독창적인 그래픽 스타일을 선보였고, 이후 비스티 보이즈(Beastie Boys), 소닉유스(Sonic Youth), 벡(Beck)을 비롯한 훌륭한 심미안을 가진 뮤지션들과 꾸준히 작업하고 있습니다. 1996년 로만 코폴라(Roman Coppola)와 함께 에이전시 '디렉터스 뷰로(The Directors Bureau)'를 설립하여, 에어(Air), 펄프(Pulp), 에브리씽 벗 더 걸(Everything but the girl),모비(Moby), 요코 오노(Yoko Ono) 등의 뮤직비디오와 리바이스, 폭스 바겐, 갭, 아디다스, 나이키, 마크 제이콥스 등 다양한 분야의 클라이언트를 위한 혁신적이고 세련된 영상 작업을 선보였습니다. 마이크 밀즈는 미술관 전시를 위해 만든 초기의 실험 영화를 시작으로 장르를 구분 짓지 않고 자신의 영상 세계를 구축합니다.  1999년 그의 첫 단편 영화 '아키텍쳐 오브 리어슈어런스(The Architecture of Reassurance)'로 현대인의 안락한 삶의 이면을 폭로하며 선댄스 영화제를 비롯한 세계 유수 영화제에서 주목 받게 되었고, 세계적인 스케이트 보더이자 페인터, 포토그래퍼인 에드 템플턴(Ed Templeton)을 위한 다큐멘터리 '데포르메(Deformer)', 미네소타에서 스케이트 보드를 타며 신문 배달을 하는 6명의 소년의 일상을 다룬 '페이퍼 보이즈(Paper Boys)'를 통해 길거리 문화에 대한 애정을 표현하기도 합니다. 2005년 레스페스트는 그의 장편 데뷔를 기념하며 마이크 밀즈 특별전 '투 바이 마이크 밀즈(Two By Mike Mills)'를 기획하였고, 첫 번째 장편영화 '썸써커(Thumbsucker)'는 그 해 베를린 국제 영화제, 선댄스 영화제에서 수상하게 됩니다. 2003년 마이크 밀즈는 클라이언트들을 위한 상업 작업을 중단하고 그의 개인 레이블 '휴먼즈(Humans)'를 도쿄에서 시작합니다. '휴먼즈 프로젝트(The Humans Project)'는 매 시즌 새로운 공약을 내걸고 포스터, 스카프, 리본, 패브릭 패턴, 티셔츠, 가방 등 직접 디자인한 다양한 형태의 제품을 선보이며, 취리히의 니브스(Nieves), 밀라노의 트립(Trip), 도쿄의 카우 북스(Cow books)와 같은 갤러리와 매장에서 순회 전시를 갖는 등 예술과 대중 문화, 순수 미술과 그래픽 디자인의 경계를 넘나들며 활동하고 있습니다. 최근에는 2004년 애론 로즈(Aaron Rose)가 기획한 '뷰티풀 루저즈(Beautiful Losers)'의 다큐멘터리에 출연하였습니다. 영화를 촬영하는 동안 가장 즐거웠던 순간은 언제인가? 
즐거웠던 순간은 아주 많았다. 새벽 5시에 레드우드 숲으로 나갔던 것이 가장 좋은 기억으로 남는다. 클레어 로하스와 함께 경비원 몰래 카메라 장비를 숨겨가지고 나가서 숲 속에 트랙과 스피커를 세팅한 다음 태양이 떠오를 때에 그녀에게 밴조 노래를 연주하게 하고 그 모습을 촬영했는데, 정말 매혹적이었다! 주변에 수많은 사슴들이 나타나서 음악에 귀를 기울이는데, 정말 마법에 걸린 듯한 순간이었다

수많은 사람들이 바깥 세상의 무관심에도 불구하고 자신들이 추구하는 고유한 방식으로 실험적인 예술 활동을 펼치고 있다.

우리는 다른 밴드들이 추구하는 방식의 성공에 대해서 생각하지 않는다. 성공은 우리가 꿈꾸는 방식대로 노래를 만들고 공연을 할 수 있는 능력을 갖추는 것이라 생각한다. 그렇게 해서 사람들이 그것을 좋아한다면 정말 멋진 일이고, 설령 좋아하지 않는다고 해도 역시 멋진 일이다. 우리는 그 과정을 있는 그대로 즐길 뿐이다.

Jennilee Marigomen is a 28-year-old Vancouver based photographer who investigates the tensions between the natural world and the urban environment - "the quiet beauty of vast landscapes and waterfronts, misty mountains, and overgrown greenery are everywhere, as are the random remnants and absurdities found on the streets of a major city꿝ancouver plays a large defining role in the themes for my pictures. I usually end up taking pictures with similar elements when I travel to other places."
