Prolific Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen, who describes her work as "surrealistic [and] intuitive?with a tendency to bring confusion", graduated from the Royal Academy of Arnhem in 1997 after studying photography, fashion and fine art. Although now choosing to focus her attention on the former, Sassen's connections to the fashion and fine art worlds are far from severed. She now produces work for Vogue, Fantastic Man, V Magazine, MIU MIU, Stella McCartney and Louis Vuitton.
Having spent four years of her childhood growing up in Kenya, Sassen's personal work focuses on West, East and South regions of the country. Pulling inspiration from dance-like, sculptural fashion spreads and the intimate work of Nan Goldin and Nobuyoshi Araki, Sassen utilises Africa's incredibly bright sunlight to create hyper-stylised, bold, graphical imagery.
